外国人である彼らに「あなたのセンスで作ってみてほしい」と、大体な感じで制作を依頼することがある。相手と意思疎通が上手くいかず、点数でいえば20点にも及ばない残念な仕上がりになることは往々にしてあるのだが、ときにいい意味での裏切りが起きて120点のものが完成することがあるからだ。これは、その好例のひとつ。
依頼したのはインドの伝統衣装・サリーや女性用アクセサリー、タッセルなどの家庭用装飾品などを専門に扱う縫製工場。インド映画で観たことのあるようなじゃらじゃらした石やビーズ、きらきらのスパンコールや刺繍など、インド特有の煌びやかな素材を使った縫製を得意としている。
このポーチのシリーズはベースデザインだけこちらで考え、配色や素材の組み合わせの手法は彼らに委ねた。機械では決して生み出せない、味わいあるハンドステッチもいい仕上がりだ。
