インドのとある街では、歩いているとすれ違う労働者の誰しもがこのバッグを持っていた。テントやオーニング(日よけ)を作る工場で出たハギレで作られているもので、その安価さと頑丈さから、ものを運ぶのに重宝されているようだ。
スピード命で縫ったガタガタのミシン目、見分けづらいネイビーとブラックが入り混じったハンドル、ときには汚れがあったりして、多くの日本人はそれを不満に思うかもしれないが、真新しいものには見出せない魅力を感じた。
バッグに書かれた数字の意味を訊ねると、どうやらサイズを示しているらしい。「この端からこの端までが36」と言われたが、単位もよくわからず、どれを測ってもサイズが合わなかった。実にインドらしく、そんなところも面白い。
この製品はこのまま、ありのままで販売した方が良いと考え、ここから仕入れる事にした。
