インドの主食といえば？と問われて、多くの日本人が思い浮かべるのは"ナン"だが、実際インドの一般家庭では"チャパティ"という全粒粉の生地を薄く平たく伸ばして焼いたものが食されている。お祝いや祭の際にはチャパティに模様をつけて食卓を華やかにしていたらしく、この台はそのためのもの。石に手彫りで複雑な模様が彫られている。チャパティを頻繁に作る人はインド人以外ではなかなかいないかもしれないが、鍋敷きや植木鉢台としても最適だ。
